Training with Me

Moksha Yoga Edmonton--- Trikonasana (triangle pose)So here's a look at my off-season and season workout routine.

In the off-season I actually do quite a lot, considering I own two gyms in Edmonton now, it just shows you how active I like to stay in the off-season. First thing that I have to change in my life is my diet. I pretty much try to eat organic foods at all time and stay healthy. I usually play at between 255-260 pounds. I'm not a big weightlifter, I was always blessed with good genetics and I never had to lift anything to be big. I mostly do a lot of cardio and in someways I kinda have to because I can gain weight quite easily. One summer, one month after the season was over, I weighed 300 pounds, I will never forget it, that was dumb and believe me I paid for it the rest of the summer.

Moksha Yoga Edmonton--- Virabhadrasana II (warrior two)So in the summer, I run a lot, two-three times a week. I run 10 km, I love running, I even register with my friends to do a number of runs organized by the running room in Edmonton where it's a kind of a friendly competition. I did a half marathon two summers ago in 1 hour and 53 minutes and I was pretty proud of that. Maybe it wasn't the fastest time, but it was the fastest in the Clydesdale Category! Haha! If there are any doubters, this result is actually posted online, look it up by clicking here. I also do a lot on the road bike. I love road biking and I`m one of those dangers on the road that cars and trucks just hate, but so far, I`ve never been hit so I will keep my fingers crossed. I also do a lot of yoga to help with my meditation and flexibility. This helps a lot, I'm not going to lie, the first day was a bit weird, but after a while you get used to it and enjoy the benefits.

In Edmonton, after trying out many yoga studios, I believe Moksha Yoga is truly the best place for my mind and my body, that practise has made me a better athlete. www.mokshayogaedmonton.com

Sparky and MeI work in the gym with my partner Simon Bennett, no one knows my body better than he does. We work on a lot of stuff and in the Body by Bennett section it explains a bit about our training. I also skate a lot, on the contrary to a lot of guys, I only take a month off skating when the season is over and slowly start skating couple times a week. One of my best conditioning tools is actually sparing on the ice, I do that with couple heavyweights in the summer to stay sharp and in shape. We trade a couple tricks together,it`s actually quite fun to watch!

During the season the volume obviously isn't quite as big since we pratice everyday. I do ride the bike a lot and still do yoga from time to time depending on the schedule. Our trainer Scott Livingston has a great specific workout regiment for me that I do after some practices when we have posted workouts. Before the game though I have quite the routine. I like to show up four hours before the game to have some quiet time alone, I meditate and pray before every game. Then I do some boxing with the trainer to warm me up, it`s the best warm-up ever and I have posted couple videos below  so you can have an idea of what it looks like. If you`re a heavyweight in any league and ever needed advice on any of that stuff don`t be afraid to drop me an e-mail, I`ll be glad to help, after all, we're all brothers!!!
